Transcranial direct current stimulation not clinically relevant in MDD

Key clinical point: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) showed no significant effects on psychomotor functioning in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).

Major finding: Treatment vs. sham stimulation group did not show significant differences in psychomotor functioning (measured using Salpêtrière Retardation Rating Scale, kinematical analysis of movements, and automatic imitation; all measures: P greater than .05).

Study details: The study evaluated psychomotor effects of anodal tDCS applied over the left dlPFC in 23 treatment-resistant MDD patients over a period of 5 days.

Disclosures: The study was sponsored by the Lundbeck Foundation. The authors declared no conflicts of interest.
