Two new conditions have been added to the federal recommendations for newborn screening – X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) and mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS1). Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell recently announced her decision to add those conditions to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). The RUSP is a recommendation from the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC). Each state determines which of the recommendations it will incorporate into its testing program.
