Genotype 1 is the most difficult of the 6 hepatitis C genotypes to treat. Currently, the preferred approach is combination treatment with pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin (RBV) in patients with an uncomplicated infection, but only half of patients reach sustained viral response (SVR) at 24 weeks; the rates are even lower in black patients: as low as 19%.
