Individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI are becoming a larger proportion of our patient base.
From the Skin of Color Center, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, New York.

Dr. Andrew Alexis discusses nonablative lasers for the treatment of acne scarring in darker skin types. He outlines the advantages of using nonablative lasers in patients with skin of color and the devices with the greatest safety and efficacy. He also provides recommendations on laser settings and patient expectations. The risk for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation also is discussed and steps to minimize this risk.
For more information, read Dr. Alexis' editorial from the December 2013 issue, "Laser Resurfacing for Treatment of Acne Scarring in Fitzpatrick Skin Types V to VI: Practical Approaches to Maximizing Safety."
